6 Alcoholic Spirits To Keep On Hand

Layla Kennedy

Alcoholic beverages are available to anyone over the age of 21. Cultivating a taste for these drinks can expose you to many intriguing new flavors. You can purchase everything you need to craft delightful cocktails at a liquor store near you. These six types of spirits can round out your home bar, allowing you to make almost any drink that catches your interest:

1. Tequila

Tequila is made from blue agave. It can be clear or golden in color, depending on the method used to make it. Many people describe the taste of tequila as smokey and slightly sweet. Tequila is commonly used to make margaritas, which can be served blended or over ice.

2. Mezcal

Mezcal is similar to tequila. In fact, mezcal can be considered a type of tequila. This spirit can be distilled from many different agave varietals. Serving mezcal without a mixer can allow you to enjoy its rich flavors. You can serve mezcal neat or on the rock for a refreshing drink on a hot evening.

3. Whiskey

Whiskey is a classic spirit that comes in many forms. You can find American, Irish, and Scotch whiskies. Each variety of whiskey has its own flavor profile that makes it uniquely suited for certain cocktails. You can try bourbon, rye whiskey, and scotch to figure out what type of whiskey you prefer.

4. Rum

Rum is a type of liquor made from sugarcane. Dark rum is made by fermenting molasses, while light rum is made from fermented sugarcane juice. Thanks to its key ingredient, rum is a naturally sweet spirit. Many people like to further enhance its sweetness by mixing it with cola and ginger ale.

5. Vodka

Vodka is a flavorless liquor that can be used in sweet and savory beverages. When mixed with tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce, vodka can make a delicious Bloody Mary. Vodka can also be mixed with fruit juices, such as orange juice and grapefruit juice, to make a Screwdriver and Greyhound, respectively. When purchasing vodka, it pays to select a quality liquor. High-quality vodka is smooth and easy to drink, devoid of the harshness that can characterize vodkas of lesser quality.

6. Gin

Finally, spirit enthusiasts can find gin at their local liquor store. Gin is similar to vodka, but it is infused with botanicals that give it its characteristic flavor. Juniper is a common addition to gin, but you can try different varieties of gin to find the flavor profile that you enjoy most.
